About Production
Where can you place the work in the history of Japanese painting? In order to find one’s art outside the boundaries of what can be labelled “Nihonga (Japanese Painting)”, or “painting”, one must have a philosophy that extends beyond that of the painting tradition. One has to think beyond material or format, and start thinking “how can I make artwork which has a force of life in the now?”
Since I started my career as an artist in the 80’s, water has been at the center of my art. The traditional Japanese animal based adhesive Nikawa becomes a binder which affixes the mineral pigments, and water becomes a medium to disperse adhesive-pigment solution throughout the surface of my work. Inside water, the movement of pigment becomes one with the water’s movement, and the power of water creates the artwork. The title of my works in recent years “Kinesis”, holds the nuance of change, motion, and with that, birth and destruction. This nuance exists not only in the finished work, but also in the process of creation, where my use of ink (the darkness), marble powder (the light), and blue (the air) evokes images of the formation of universes.
In the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011, the water’s force became a water terror. Water has taken the lives of many, but it is also water that gives life to us and the world’s ecosystems. It is this thought of living with water as a force of life, that will take us into the future, and which is a source of motivation for my practice.
